ICANN, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers- the non-profit group that oversees domain names have hinted that they might allow web addresses in languages other than English.
This could potentially open up the web to many people around the world who do not understand English as addresses could be in characters as diverse as Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Greek, Hindi and Russian.
This could be the biggest change to the internet since its invention 40 years ago.
If the change is approved by the ICANN board meeting this friday, ICANN would begin accepting applications for non-Latin domain names and the first entries into the world wide web would likely come sometime in mid 2010.
So, this would mean a lot for millions of people in India and other part of the world where English or other Latin languages is not understood. This would make the web truly open as well as help search engines show better results to the for these languages.
However, as usual domain squatting will be the problem faced by big companies and celebrities.
