Is targeted traffic really important?

Consider this example. There is a lazy village or a small town in the country side. There is a food stall, CD shop and sports goods shop. These places will be frequented by their patrons and new customers which might increase or decrease on daily basis. But that place has been declared as a host for a popular sporting event or a musical concert. There will be a huge jump in the visitors to the village resulting in more customers to these shops.
Case a> If it is a sport event, these new visitors are more likely to buy sports goods benefiting the sports shop but few might even purchase stuff from the CD shop.
Case b> In case of musical event the reverse would happen. However, the sports shop will not benefit much from this scenario as CD shop had done in case a.
Only food stall will benefit, irrespective of the events held. This shows that in order to sell certain products, targeted traffic is not important. Same is with online venture. It depends on what you sell that targeted traffic is required.
