WordPress has a great anti-comment spam plugin askimet. It is quite effective against most spam.

But these days I have noticed spammers going in stealth mode. Initially they would just write crap comment usually lot of random character filled with links. It was easy to track.

For egs. For the post Chrome is finally in top 3 worldwide and in US, overtakes Safari I got the following comment

Genial dispatch and this mail helped me alot in my college assignement. Thank you seeking your information.

The above comment you can see is not at all related to the topic and was correctly marked spam by askimet.

Another lousy egs of spamming I get for almost every post is similar to this which I got for Why tech websites and blogs should avoid using third-party advertising like AdSense

Download Free Best Films HD in the World.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010) HDTV

http://kino-manija.ru/images/stories/films_1/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows%201.jpg

david reid london movie film gopi
http://florida-grouper-season-closed.zanovo.pp.ua/ free freaky porno movies

These are easy to track for askimet and even if it manages to bypass spam filter, we can be sure that it is spam.

However, I have noticed these days that spammers are using stealth tactics to bypass askimet and confuse the comment moderator.

Here is the spam comment I got for Apple collecting, sharing iPhone users’ locations to deliver ads

Great information! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks!

This comment seems to be genuine. However, the url of the commenter is of course of a generic medicines website. Initially, I had allowed the comment to be published but later I started receiving the same comment for every post. I quickly unapproved all of them.

Another example is (for Secure your Laptop )

HI webmaster, can I use many content from this article if I retunn a link back to your site? I will be very grateful.

But now another type of techniques are being used by the spammers. Instead of just making comment that praises the blogger or his blog, make a comment that is relevant to the post or at least has relevant keywords.

Example: Power of keywords in Affiliate Marketing

i signed up with the Amazon Omakaze affiliate program. i am not yet earning from this affiliate program because my blog is still very new..~,

You can see how the commenter has carefully used relevant keyword to mask it. But the comment as whole is quite irrelevant.

Another Example: Koreans watch Avatar in 4D

it is really exciting to watch 3d movies. i hope that there would be 3d sexy movies too.;’”

Similar to the above.

What to do?

One way to find out if the comment you received for moderation is a spam or not is to check the Url of the commenter. See if it is the usual spam link for viagra, etc.

If you are still confused then Google search the entire comment. You are sure to find the entire text, as it is in many websites. Here is the screen shot.

I came to your site from newser.com . I must say I was disappointed that a big magazine company like yours would resort to such cheap tricks of increasing page impression to get more ad revenue. Your story about world’s worst dressed leaderswas quite interesting. Newser had listed 5 on their page and had given the link to your site for rest of the leaders. But I was disgusted looking at your website. Each leader on different page. We the readers are busy people who need information and entertainment at one glance. Even porn sites give most of what is required on one page.

When we see an interesting story link we need information quickly at one glance. News agencies like yours are are crying hoarse about blogs and news aggregators stealing your content. These blogs and aggregators survive because they give their users what they want without making them jump through the loop. If you content providers would have been intent on making your site useful for the reader rather than money making machine, then maybe you would have got more revenues. Just look at Google. It’s homepage gets millions of hits per day.The company can make even more money by cluttering the homepage with image ads, but they haven’t done it in order to improve user experience.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone copies your story about the worst dressed leaders and puts it on one page and get more valuable traffic than yours. Valuable means happy visitors who would like to engage with the website because the website does not piss them off. I was planning to tweet the story to my followers but I decided that you don’t require the extra 10-15 visitors that would have been generated due to my tweet.
