Google + is the new social network launched by the Internet giant Google.

It consists of photo, short description, links to other social networking site mentioned by you in your plus profile.

It will be intresting to see if Google makes public posts of users searchable as it has been hailed as a good blogging platform. Kevin Rose has even redirected his blog http://kevinrose.com to his Google+ profile.

Update: Google is indeed showing public posts in its search result. Though I had to put in an entire sentence from Scoble’s public post in the search box to find his post, it wouldn’t be long before Google gives G+ posts more weightage for short keywords.

With Google giving importance to Google Plus posts, it seems we won’t be quiting Google plus soon. I mean, who can give up the urge of commenting on some juicy posts? Google might have other failed products like Knol which it tried to resucitate by displaying it in search results, but in this case it is social+information.

We all loved Christopher Nolan’s movie Inception. It has been trending on twitter even before it released. Now think how to take advantage of people tweeting and searching about the movie Inception. Simple, use the word as a part of sentence and promote it.

The Last Exorcism movie makers have used this trick to good effect. They have advertised their movie on twitter and have cleverly used the popular keyword ‘Inception’ without making it evident that it is spam.

Twitter on its help page has mentioned that only tweets that resonate will be shown. This particular tweet had just 9 retweets after 13 hours but was still being displayed on the search result page of ‘Inception’. Simply, because people who were tweeting about the movie ‘Inception’ were helping this tweet resonate.

Google has been granted a patent to a technology that will track mouse movements to deliver relevant results. The title is “System and method for modulating search relevancy using pointer activity monitoring”. Here is how the abstract for the patent describes it:

A method and system of modulating search result relevancy use various types of user browsing activities. In particular, a client assistant residing in a client computer monitors movements of a user controlled pointer in a web browser, e.g., when the pointer moves into a predefined region and when it moves out of the predefined region. A server then determines a relevancy value between an informational item associated with the predefined region and a search query according to the pointer hover period. When preparing a new search result responsive to a search query, the server re-orders identified informational items in accordance with their respective relevancy values such that more relevant items appear before less relevant ones. The server also uses the relevancy values to determine and/or adjust the content of an one-box result associated with a search query.

It means that if a user quickly moves his mouse towards a result, Google will know that it is relevant to him. If a user hovers over a result or an ad then it means that the user found the result or ad interesting.

Free blogging platforms like Blogger and WordPress have been a boon to many people who had little or no knowledge about web designing an programming. It was just add gadgets/widgets or search Google to find minor hacks or tweaks for things these platforms didn’t provide any direct help.

However, this is going to change. The search engine giant Google has announced that Website’s Page Speed will be a factor in its search ranking. It is currently applicable for English searches from Google.com only and that it only carries little weight in comparison with relevancy. Knowing Google, it wouldn’t be long before they make page speed a significant part of the algorithm for ranking websites.

This means that every serious blogger will have to learn basics for web designing and programming in order to make his site outrank others. There are many tools for help. They have been mentioned on the google blog post like Firefox addon Page Speed, Yahoo’s ySlow, etc.

These tools will only help you find out issues with your site and give suggestions. You will have to make the suitable changes yourself and for that you will need learn the basics at least .

Some suggestions for improving site speed is that serve images from your own server to minimise DNS look ups, remove unused codes and use ads from networks that load quickly.

Many professional web developers are going to gain from this as many people would want their services.

After China, it is India’s turn to censor the internet. Bing and Yahoo have started censoring sexually explicit content on the internet. You cannot search for anything that is related to vulgarity. You can’t search for “sex discrimination” because it has the keyword “sex”in it.

Yahoo only censors images while Bing censors even the web results. What’s more – SafeSearch is by default on and cannot be changed. However, the biggest search engine Google has not yet started censoring.

The clampdown is due to recent changes to India’s Information Technology Act of 2000, which bans the publication of pornographic material.

You can bypass this by changing your search location to US or any other western country. That is go to the US version of the search engines.

Other countries’ users can try it out by going to the Indian version of the search engines.

Click on the images to see them maximised.

Update: You can’t search for Porn Actresses’ names or any other thing that would return vulgar images.

Update 2(10/july/2010): Bing seems to have fix it and it does return results for the keywords sex and sex discrimination, however, other terms that return sexually explicit results are still banned.

The big boys are slogging it out to gain large pie of the internet search market. Google dominates it, with Yahoo and Microsoft trying to make a dent in it’s market share. Microsoft made quite some buzz with Bing.

All these search engines search for web documents and try to give the WebPages on the result’s page based on your keyword(s). They search historical sites to find the information. So, it may take some time before current events make it to its search results. Google displays Google news links on it’s homepage for current events.

After the Twitter effect, now the search results are real time. You are able to know what the twitterers are tweeting about in real time using Twitter Search. The page will request you to refresh after some time and will also display how many new tweets have been made after the results were displayed.

Tweetmeme aggregates links shared on twitter in to categories and sub-categories. You can use this to find the popular links on twittersphere.

OneRiot is another real time search engines which crawls twitter, digg and other sites to give fresh socially relevant results.

Scoopler also scans social networking sites and gives real time search results. These results update automatically and you don’t have to refresh.

Collecta scans blog posts, blog comments, twitter, jaiku, identica and flickr. Its results also updates automatically.

You can use these services to search for current events and find out what is hot right now but you need to use Google to do research and find new things that others are not interested in.

If you want to use google search in real time mode use their blogsearch and sort the results by date. Further, Google now gives the ability to search for documents according it’s publish time.
